Homelite Little Red XL Chainsaw Service Manual

The Homelite Little Red XL chainsaw is a lightweight and powerful saw that can handle a variety of cutting tasks. It features an automatic oiler, a chain brake, and a 16-inch guide bar. The saw is easy to operate and maintain, but it requires some basic knowledge and skills to ensure its optimal performance and safety. This article will provide you with the information you need to service your Homelite Little Red XL chainsaw, including how to troubleshoot common problems, how to adjust the carburetor, and how to replace the spark plug and the chain.

Troubleshooting

If your Homelite Little Red XL chainsaw fails to start or starts with difficulty, there are several possible causes that you can check and fix. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Fuel system: Make sure that the fuel tank is filled with fresh gasoline mixed with the recommended amount of two-cycle oil. Check the fuel filter and the fuel line for clogs or leaks. Replace them if necessary. Clean the carburetor and the air filter if they are dirty or contaminated.

  • Ignition system: Check the spark plug for fouling, corrosion, or damage. Clean or replace it if necessary. Check the spark plug gap and adjust it to 0.025 inch (0.64 mm) if needed. Check the ignition wire and the boot for cracks or breaks. Replace them if necessary.

  • Compression system: Check the cylinder and the piston for wear or damage. Replace them if necessary. Check the muffler and the exhaust port for carbon buildup or obstruction. Clean them if necessary.

  • Chain brake: Make sure that the chain brake is disengaged before starting the saw. To disengage the chain brake, pull the hand guard toward the front handle until you hear a click.

If your Homelite Little Red XL chainsaw runs poorly, stalls, or lacks power, there are several possible causes that you can check and fix. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Fuel system: Make sure that the fuel mixture is fresh and properly mixed.

  • Carburetor adjustment: Adjust the idle speed screw and the high speed screw according to the instructions in the next section.

Carburetor Adjustment

The carburetor of your Homelite Little Red XL chainsaw controls the fuel and air mixture that enters the engine. It has two adjustment screws: one for idle speed (T) and one for high speed (H). The idle speed screw regulates the engine speed at idle, while the high speed screw regulates the engine speed at full throttle.

To adjust the carburetor, you will need a small flat-head screwdriver and a tachometer (optional). Follow these steps:

  • Start the saw and let it warm up for a few minutes.

  • Turn both screws clockwise until they are lightly seated, then turn them counterclockwise one full turn.

  • Adjust the idle speed screw (T) until the engine idles smoothly without stalling or racing. The chain should not move when the engine is idling.

  • Squeeze the throttle trigger and check if the engine accelerates smoothly without hesitation or bogging down. If not, adjust the high speed screw (H) slightly until you get a smooth acceleration.

  • If you have a tachometer, check that the maximum engine speed does not exceed 12,000 rpm. If it does, turn the high speed screw (H) counterclockwise until the engine speed drops to 12,000 rpm or below.

  • Recheck the idle speed and readjust it if necessary.

Note: Do not over-tighten the screws, as this may damage the carburetor. Do not adjust the carburetor when the air filter or the muffler is removed, as this may result in a lean mixture that can damage the engine.

Spark Plug and Chain Replacement

The spark plug and the chain of your Homelite Little Red XL chainsaw are two of the most important parts that affect its performance and safety. They should be inspected regularly and replaced when they are worn or damaged. Here are some tips on how to replace them:

  • Spark plug: To replace the spark plug, you will need a spark plug wrench and a feeler gauge. Follow these steps:

  • Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire.

  • Clean the area around the spark plug to prevent dirt from entering the cylinder.

  • Remove the spark plug with the spark plug wrench.

  • Check the spark plug for fouling, corrosion, or damage. Replace it if necessary.

  • Check the spark plug gap and adjust it to 0.025 inch (0.64 mm) with the feeler gauge if needed.

  • Install the new or cleaned spark plug and tighten it with the spark plug wrench.

  • Reconnect the spark plug wire.

  • Chain: To replace the chain, you will need a flat-head screwdriver and a pair of gloves. Follow these steps:

  • Stop the engine and engage the chain brake.

  • Loosen the bar nuts and remove the clutch cover.

  • Loosen the tensioning screw and remove the old chain from the guide bar.

  • Clean the guide bar and the sprocket of any dirt or debris.

  • Install the new chain on the guide bar, making sure that the cutting edges are facing forward on the top of the bar.

  • Place the guide bar and the chain on the saw, making sure that the chain fits into the sprocket.

  • Tighten the tensioning screw until there is no slack in the chain, but it can still be rotated by hand.

  • Replace the clutch cover and tighten the bar nuts finger-tight.

  • Lift up on the tip of the guide bar and tighten the bar nuts with a wrench.

  • Check that the chain brake works properly by pulling and releasing the hand guard.

Note: Always use genuine Homelite replacement parts for your chainsaw. The recommended spark plug is Champion CJ6Y or equivalent. The recommended chain is Oregon S56 or equivalent. The recommended chain pitch is 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) low profile, and the recommended chain gauge is 0.050 inch (1.3 mm).
